SPEAKER
Anthony Carr, DVM, DACVIM
Small Animal Clinical Sciences, WCVM
Saskatoon, SK
The focus of this session is the practical diagnosis and management of heart disease in small animal patients. In practice, physical exam, ECG and radiography combined with common sense are usually all that are needed to establish an appropriate treatment plan. Echocardiography will not be a major focus other than to point out when an echo would be nice, when it would be important or when it would be absolutely vital to manage a case appropriately. Current treatment recommendations for various forms of heart disease including congestive heart failure and arrhythmias will be discussed as well. Topics to be covered include:
- Radiographic imaging: only good rads get you a diagnosis
- The ECG: what can it do for you in practice
- Arrhythmias: diagnosis and treatment
- Therapy of CHF: When to use pimobendan and when not; spironolactone; beta blockers, etc.
- Case discussions: A chance to apply what was discussed
Internal Medicine Round-up
This session will cover a potpourri of internal medicine problems. Focus will be on practical diagnosis and treatment of such conditions as chronic renal disease, IMHA, hyperadrenocorticism, and hyperthyroidism.
Diagnosing and treating chronic renal failure (importance of diet, phosphate binders, blood pressure measurement, proteinuria assessment, microalbuminuria)
- IMHA: an update on therapy (low dose aspirin, human IvIgG, other immune suppressives) and risk factors that tell you the case is likely to go bad.
- Diagnosing and treating (trilostane vs. lysodren) Cushings disease with special emphasis on recognizing the adverse effects untreated Cushings can have (hypoxia, hypertension, calcium oxalate stones, etc.).
- Diagnosing and treating hyperthyroidism (importance of establishing renal function, methimazole, iopanoic acid, etc.).
