SPEAKER
Pamela Baker BSc, DVM
Veterinary Technician Program, Seneca College
In-house cytologic evaluation can generate immediately useful clinical information. The veterinary technician can play a vital role in both the processing and analysis of cytology samples.
This is a practical, hands-on course with interactive sessions. Since "the results are only as good as the sample", the workshop will start with a review of sample handling, including various methods of smear preparation and staining. Identification of common cell types and organisms, and the approach to smear evaluation will follow. The distinguishing features of inflammatory and neoplastic samples will be demonstrated using high quality digital images and PowerPoint. The remainder of the time will be spent discussing and studying samples frequently evaluated in-house, including ear smears, body cavity fluids and common cutaneous and subcutaneous masses. Emphasis will be placed on practical, clinically applicable skills. Attendees will have ample opportunity to examine related samples using double-headed microscopes.
Note: This session is geared towards veterinary technicians. Attendees should have basic laboratory knowledge and microscope skills.
Dr. Pamela Baker graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1986. She has practiced small animal medicine since graduation and in addition has been a full-time professor for the Veterinary Technician Program at Seneca College since 1992.
