The applications of communication in veterinary medicine are vast and go beyond the veterinarian- client-patient relationship. With clinical communication, unlike interpersonal communication, these communication skills are evidence based and are intentionally used at particular times during a medical interview for specific reasons. Successful clinical communication pays back with greater team satisfaction, positive performance reviews and best possible outcomes for patients and their care givers.

Communication Matters uses the Calgary Cambridge Guide as a framework to promoting collaborative partnerships between the client and the veterinary professional. The guide details the steps involved in the medical interview and the clinical communication skills required during each step of the interview. The program is highly interactive with video, audio and text-based scenarios and exercises in applying the most essential communication skills that will aid all members of the team in dealing with clients.

    Veterinary team members will learn:
  • Understand the benefits of effective communication
  • Recognize and discriminate between different styles of communication
  • Apply effective communication skills to a variety of situations that may occur in the veterinary practice
  • Integrate veterinary skills and knowledge with communication or process skills
  • Develop and set goals for ongoing development of communication within the practice
